EV Chargers

EV Charging Overview

Although the upfront cost of an electric vehicle is often higher, they can be cheaper to run, due to the lower cost of electricity compared to petrol or diesel. Recharging at home (overnight) will normally result in the greatest cost savings. Chargepoints can be installed in various locations, including homes with garages or driveways, workplaces, residential streets, town centres, public car parks, and destinations like shopping centres or motorway service stations.

Types of charging points

Slow chargepoints (3KW)

Slow charge points are typically the most cost-effective option and are ideal for vehicles parked for several hours, such as during working hours or overnight.

Fast chargepoints (7KW-22KW)

Fast charge points are ideal for vehicles parked for a few hours or as a quick overnight charging solution, making them perfect for home installations. A 7kW charger is suitable for properties with a single-phase electrical supply, which is common in most UK homes. On the other hand, a 22 kW charger is designed for properties with a three-phase supply, so it's helpful to know your property's electrical setup. If you're unsure, Greenio will gladly assist you during the quote process.

Rapid chargepoints (50KW+)

Rapid chargepoints offer the fastest way to recharge a vehicle,

typically bringing it to 80% in around 30 minutes. However, rapid charge points can be the most costly option and they cannot be installed at home.

Benefits of Installing an EV Charger

Cost Effective

Charging your Electric car at home is usually much cheaper than using Rapid Charge points at the service station. The average cost to fully charge your car is just over £3. For instance, to fully charging a 30kWh Nissan LEAF overnight will cost around £3.96. Whereas, using a rapid charging point, typically found at service stations, would cost arout £6.50 for a 30-minute charge.

Convenience

Having an EV charger installed at home is far more convenient and time effective than relying on public use chargers.

Faster

Home chargers are typically much faster than public EV chargers. Depending on the charger's size, your car can be fully charged in as little as one hour. This allows you to get back on the road with a fully charged battery much more quickly than with a public charger - unless you opt for a rapid charger, which can be expensive.

Property Value

Each year, more people are switching from petrol or diesel vehicles to electric or hybrid model, leading to increased demand for charging points. Installing an electric vehicle charging point at your home can enhance your property's value, making it more appealing to potential buyers if you decide to sell. If you choose to move, Greenio offers a relocation service to transfer your EV charger to your new address, ensuring you receive the same professional service and installation as before.

FAQs

How long does it take to achieve a full charge?

This depends on the battery size in your car and the power of your charge point. Typically plug-in hybrids (e.g. Golf GTE, Prius) charge at a rate of 3.7kW, fully charging within 3 hours. Fully electric cars (e.g. Tesla) can charge at 7.4kW on a single phase supply but have a much bigger battery, e.g a 75kWh Tesla Model S would take 10 hours to fully charge. A 3.7kW charge charges at a rate of approximately 12mph, while a 7.4kW charge charges at a rate of approximately 24mph.

How often do you have to charge an electric car?

Compared to petrol or diesel vehicles, which typically require a refill every few weeks, many new EV drivers often wonder how frequently they need to charge their car. The answer largely depends on your driving habits and vehicle's range.

Can I charge my EV for free from my solar panels?

Yes, there are a couple of ways to do this. One is to use a dedicated Zappi charger, which diverts excess generated energy into your electric vehicle. This means that instead of exporting that energy back to the grid you're using it for zero-carbon mobility. However, this requires having your EV parked at home during the day. The alternative is to use a battery system to store that energy and then discharge it into your EV in the evening or nighttime.

How long does it take to install an EV charger?

Greenio can typically install your new EV Charger in about half a day. If your fuse box is located far from the charging point or cables need to be routed through internal rooms, the installation may take a little longer.

Whats the difference between tethered and untethered EV Chargers?

A tethered charger has a cable that is permanently attached to the unit. In contrast, untethered chargers do not come with a cable included as standard so you'll need to purchase one separately.

Where can I install an electric vehicle charger?

EV chargers are weatherproof so they can usually be installed on the side of your home, inside a garage or on your driveway. Given that most EV charging cables range between 5 to 10m in length, it's important to consider where you park most frequently.
